Good Riddance and Hello

Is there reason for hope? I say yes!

The end of one year and beginning of another is upon us once again. Maybe more than in recent memory, this is an opportunity to celebrate the passing of the old and the hope of the new. Few years (the last three, actually) have so deserved a Bronx cheer at their dismissal.

I won't get into all the reasons I say this. If you don't already know then I want a ticket to your location, unless it's a place where white coats take care of your every need, of course. I'm thinking of a nice tropical beach with two palm trees the perfect distance apart for a hammock. Give me peace, serenity, and quiet, along with stunning sunsets and the soothing sound of surf at the door and I will take it.

The last year has not been devoid of things to be thankful for, of course. Good news after a trying illness, time spent with far away family and the nearby as well, fellowship with good friends of strength and character, and a growing sense of intimacy with God top the list. One of the things I am in the middle of, and which you are likely to read about at some point, is an overall simplification and re-focusing of life. It is still a work in progress, but early returns are promising.

There are other reasons to be encouraged as well, including renewed purpose and the vitality that comes with it, the promise of a good year ahead, and looking even further ahead. No, I don't know the details or even the basics in some cases, but I do know the One who does, and I choose to put my faith and hope in Him.

I have a sense of good things coming. Not a Pollyannish kind of world, but a better one. I may be skeptical about man in general these days, but I am all in on the notion that God is in control, that the skies will eventually lighten, and that we will collectively come to our senses. Peace is better than war, civility better than demonization, and love better than hate. In all things.

Can we really return to a time of civility, respect, honor, and truth? Yes, we can, if we choose to. Enjoy the season and all that it brings, and the future that is just around the corner. Most of all, choose well. Choose Hope.
